Baseball Player of the Year Watch List

Chris Arroyo, Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, Fla.)
The ace of the Eagles staff is 9-0 on the season with a 0.97 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 43.1 innings pitched for the team that's reached No. 4 in the nation at one point this season. He threw six, no-hit innings with 13 strikeouts against Monsignor Pace and he threw a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts against Coral Springs.

Dominic Castellano, Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.)
The Tigers' ace is 7-1 with a 1.40 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 45 innings pitched as the Florida squad has been among the best teams all season. He also threw a no-hitter and was one of three pitchers to combine for a second no-hitter. He threw a seven-inning no-hitter against Sarasota, winning 3-0 with  eight strikeouts.

Jake Dresselhouse, St. Mary Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.)
The Eaglets' lead-off batter has been a heavy hitter this year. He's bashed seven home runs, including three grand slams, while leading St. Mary Prep to 21 straight wins to begin the season, and 41 in a row dating back to the 2019 season. He's batting .422 with 40 runs scored and 34 RBI.

Jackson Ferris, IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.)
He opened the season with a no-hitter against Palmetto and followed that up with a perfect game against Flower Mound (Texas). He had double-digit strikeout totals in his first five games and didn't allow an earned run until his sixth outing. He's 8-0 record with a 0.55 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 50.2 innings pitched.

Cooper Kinney, Baylor (Chattanooga, Tenn.)
The Red Raiders picked up a big win last week, 5-2 over Farragut. Kinney had a double, a home run and three RBI in the win, a performance that has become typical for the Baylor infielder. Kinney is batting .468 with 26 runs, 37 RBI, 16 doubles and seven home runs.

Dylan Lesko, Buford (Ga.)
Lesko has been a force on the mound and at the plate for the No. 1 ranked Wolves. Ranked as the No. 2 junior in the nation by Perfect Game, Lesko is 10-0 on the mound with a 0.26 ERA and 102 strikeouts and 12 walks. His best outings include an 18 strikeout game and he's thrown one no-hitter. On offense, Lesko is batting .412 (35 for 85) with 16 runs, 25 RBI, 7 doubles, a triple and 3 home runs.

Braden Montgomery, Madison Central (Madison, Miss.)
The Jaguars got off to a 24-0 start to the season and rose all the way to No. 3 in the national rankings before falling back following a loss. Montgomery has been key in the Jags' success, batting .459 with 39 RBI, four doubles, five triples and five home runs. He has also been stellar on the mound with a 6-1 record, a 0.39 ERA, and 71 strikeouts. His best outing came against Warren Central when he pitched six, no-hit innings with 16 strikeouts.

Sal Stewart, Westminster Christian (Miami)
After hitting four homers as a freshman and no home runs in a shortened 2020 season, Stewart leads the nation in home runs with 16. A total of 29 of his 42 base hits have gone for extra bases with a 11 doubles and two triples. He's batting .560 with 35 RBI and 39 runs. He came up big in Westminster Christian's win over nationally-ranked Stoneman Douglas with a home run and a pair of RBI.

Drake Varnado, IMG Academy
On a team loaded with potential first-round MLB draft picks, Varnado has been the consistent threat for the Ascenders. He leads IMG starters in batting average (.434), runs (33), hits (36), and home runs (7). He had two home runs in wins over Florence and Montverde Academy.

Jack Walker, Barbe (Lake Charles, La.)
After sitting out his junior season with an arm injury, Walker has returned to form this year leading Barbe to a 35-2 record. He is 12-0 with a 0.44 ERA. In 63.2 innings pitched, has 97 strikeouts. Walker has thrown two no-hitters on the season, including one in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs.

High school football: HIGHSCORE Junior All-American Luther Burden stars in second 2020-21 season - HIGHSCORE
High school football: MaxPreps Junior All-American Luther Burden stars in second 2020-21 season
Former Cardinal Ritter College Prep (St. Louis) standout Luther Burden III was named to the most recent MaxPreps Junior All-America first team after hauling in 31 receptions for 895 yards and 13 touchdowns during a shortened eight-game fall season. But the Oklahoma commit and nation's top-rated junior wide receiver was just warming up.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder wraps up a six-game spring campaign for East St. Louis (Ill.) on Friday as the Flyers host Edwardsville (Ill.) in their season finale.

The five-star standout transferred to the Illinois power at the end of January and leads the team in receptions (27), receiving yards (564) and receiving touchdowns (five). Rated the nation's No. 10 recruit overall from the Class of 2022 by 247Sports, he also has a punt return for a score.

Due to COVID-19 and protocols, only 35 states completed football seasons in the fall, 11 opted for the spring and four didn't play at all.

During his career at Cardinal Ritter, Burden caught 124 passes for 2,941 yards and 39 touchdowns. He also helped lead the Lions to a Class 3 state title in basketball during his sophomore year.

Luther Burden III accumulated almost 3,000 career receiving yards and 40 touchdowns while at Cardinal Ritter.
Friday night will be the second time that East St. Louis plays Edwardsville this spring after cruising to a 52-21 win on April 2. Burden had seven receptions for 130 yards and a score in that one.

In his fall and spring seasons combined, Burden has 58 catches for 1,459 yards (25.1 yards per catch), which reveals why 39 FBS schools have made him scholarship offers.

When East St. Louis quarterback and 2019 MaxPreps Junior All-American Tyler Macon graduated early and enrolled at Missouri, freshman Robert "Pops" Battle stepped up. With Burden as his main target, Battle has accounted for nearly 1,400 yards of total offense and 16 touchdowns.

Battle and Burden figure to be one of the nation's best quarterback-wide receiver combinations in the fall.

With their vast talent returning, expect the Flyers (4-1) to be ranked in our preseason Top 100 rankings that will be released in the summer. They have won 22 of their last 24 games and claimed the Class 6A state title in 2019.

Burden headlines a very strong recruiting class for Lincoln Riley and Oklahoma for 2022.

It also features four-star running back Raleek Brown, of Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), Edmond Santa Fe (Edmond, Okla.) four-star wide receiver Talyn Shettron, Cooper (Lubbock, Texas) four-star linebacker Kobie McKinzie, Garland (Texas) four-star wide receiver Jordan Hudson, West Orange-Stark (Orange, Texas) three-star center Demetrius Hunter and Aledo (Texas) three-star tight end Jason Llewellyn.

Burden's unusual junior spit season isn't unique during an unusual pandemic school year. Senior quarterback Jayce Knapp returned to Wilsonville (Ore.) in the spring after playing the fall season in Texas at Del Valle. As told here, Knapp split time as starter at both schools, throwing for more than 2,000 yards and 27 touchdowns.

High school football: Servite drops to No. 5, looks to rebound in HIGHSCORE Top 25 California rankings - HIGHSCORE
High school football: Servite drops to No. 5, looks to rebound in MaxPreps Top 25 California rankings
Maybe it's not fair to drop two spots after a competitive game with the defending national champions. But the Friars of Servite have a big chance to show they didn't deserve to drop at all.

Servite fell from third to fifth in the latest MaxPreps Top 25 California high school football rankings, after dropping a back-and-forth 38-28 game last week at No. 2 St. John Bosco. The Friars have no time to dwell upon it. They play No. 1 Mater Dei on Saturday in another Trinity League showdown at Santa Ana Stadium.

Big games from Jabari Bates (173 yards rushing, 75-yard touchdown) and 6-foot-5, 263-pound sophomore Matayo Uiagalelei (two touchdown catches) keyed Bosco's win, but the Friars were within a field goal, 31-28, with just over five minutes left. A 1-yard sneak by junior quarterback Noah Fifita accounted for one of his three touchdowns and closed the gap. A 15-yard touchdown run by Michael Hayes clinched the Bosco win with just under two minutes remaining.

But Servite, trying to be the first Southern California team St. John Bosco other than Mater Dei in six years, almost pulled it off. Now, the Friars face the Monarchs, who last year beat them 56-11. Servite no doubt remembers that game and score.

CALIFORNIA SPRING COMPUTER RANKINGS: Compare to human rankings below

Third-ranked Centennial (Corona), which has outscored two opponents 113-6, doesn't figure to get challenged like all those in the Trinity League. Fourth-ranked De Le Salle (Concord) extended its unbeaten streak against Northern California teams to 313 games following a 49-6 home win over San Ramon Valley (Danville) Saturday.

The Spartans, like Centennial, should roll in their all-league schedule. They piled up 577 yards including 390 on the ground during in the win and senior quarterback Dorian Hale, a Sacramento State commit, became just the third DLS player to go over the 4,000-yard passing plateau by completing 3-of-5 passes for 156 yards. Teammate Nico Torrez rushed seven times for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

Buchanan (Clovis) is one of three new teams in the rankings after defeating previous No. 19 Central (Fresno) 31-28. The Bears replaced Central at No. 19.

The other squads to move in were No. 22 Lincoln (San Diego) and defending state Division 2-AA champion Pacifica (Oxnard), at No. 25. In two weeks, Lincoln will take on No. 10 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) for bragging rights of the San Diego Section.
